メスのサケが産卵する場所を探すのに、「匂いを嗅ぐような動作」をするという話は聞いていましたが、撮影したのはこの時が初めてです。目の前に泳いできたメスがおもむろに顔を底につけ、尾びれを水上に出しながら「くんくん」していました。
